Featheredge Boards

Featheredge boards are the core component of a closeboard fencing system, providing the vertical face of the fence and delivering one of the strongest and most traditional fencing styles available. In fact, ach board is sawn diagonally from thicker timber (the 2EX cutting method), producing a tapered profile that overlaps neatly with the next board. As a result, this creates a continuous, weather-resistant barrier designed to withstand the elements.

At Clarke Fencing, we supply high-quality pressure-treated featheredge boards, available in a range of lengths and thicknesses to suit every project. Whether you are building a garden boundary in a domestic setting or erecting a heavy-duty fence for agricultural or commercial use, featheredge fencing offers unbeatable durability and a professional finish.

Why Choose Featheredge Boards?

Featheredge fencing is a long-standing favourite across Suffolk and East Anglia, trusted by tradesmen, contractors, and homeowners alike. Unlike using pre-made panels. featheredge fencing gives you complete control over fence height, spacing, and design.

Key benefits include:

  • Strength – overlap system creates a robust fence resistant to wind and movement

  • Durability – UC4 pressure treatment protects against rot and decay

  • Flexibility – ideal for sloping ground or custom fence heights

  • Aesthetics – a smart, traditional look that blends into any garden or landscape

How Featheredge Boards Fit Into Closeboard Fencing

Featheredge boards are nailed side by side onto horizontal cant rails, with each thicker edge overlapping the thinner edge of the previous board. This method ensures no gaps and also minimises warping.

A complete closeboard system typically includes:

How Do You Install Featheredge Boards?

  2. Fix cant rails horizontally between the posts.

  3. Position a gravel board at the base to protect against soil contact.

  4. Nail each featheredge board so the thick edge overlaps the thin edge of the previous one, ensuring nails go into the top board only.

  5. Continue until the bay is complete.

  6. Finally, add closeboard capping for a neat and weather-resistant finish.
