The Anatomy of a Fence: What Makes a Long-Lasting Boundary?

A strong fence is more than just posts and panels, it’s a carefully constructed system where every component plays a vital role. Whether you’re setting out to enclose a garden, improve privacy, or define a boundary, understanding what goes into a durable fence can save you time, money, and future frustration. From the rock-solid fence posts beneath the surface to the cant rails, gravel boards, and feather edge boards that complete the structure, each element contributes to your fence’s long-term performance.

Fence Posts: Your Foundation for Success

Fence posts are the backbone of any boundary. Without a strong, stable foundation, even the best-quality fencing will eventually fail, whether through leaning, rotting, or full collapse.

Timber vs Concrete Fence Posts

Timber fence posts offer a more traditional, natural look and are often preferred for garden projects where aesthetics are key. When pressure-treated and maintained properly, they can last 15 to 20 years. They’re also easier to install and work well with decorative fence designs.

However, concrete fence posts are the go-to for long-term durability. They’re immune to rot, incredibly stable, and can support heavier loads such as Closeboard fencing. A concrete post installation can last 25 to 30 years or more with minimal upkeep, though the trade-off is their weight and less natural appearance.

Fence Rails: The Unsung Heroes of Stability

Often overlooked, fence rails (also known as cant rails) are the horizontal supports that tie your fence together, running between each post to add rigidity and strength. When you’re not using ready-made panels, as in Closeboard fencing, rails are absolutely essential.

Cant rails are typically available in 2.4m, 3m, and 3.6m lengths, allowing flexibility depending on your bay size. Most standard fencing bays are 2.4m or 3m wide, but for additional strength, especially in exposed or high-wind areas, you can span a 3.6m rail across two posts, effectively creating two 1.8m bays. This reduces flex and increases the fence’s overall resilience.

When using rails, remember: you’re not installing panels. Instead, you build a continuous run using rails, recessed fence posts, and feather edge boards to create a uniform Closeboard fence. This method allows for a stronger and more seamless boundary, especially over uneven terrain.

Panels or Boards: Style Meets Function

Not all fences use panels, but when they do, the panel type plays a big role in appearance and performance.

Closeboard fencing is one of the most durable and traditional choices. Built using individual feather edge boards nailed onto cant rails and recessed posts, this method doesn’t use pre-made panels. Instead, it creates a continuous, solid wall with excellent wind resistance and privacy. It’s more labour-intensive, but offers unmatched strength and repair flexibility.

Other options include:

  • Lap panels – cost-effective and simple to replace, great for quick garden installations.
  • Venetian panels – a stylish option for design-led gardens, these allow airflow while still offering some privacy.

When choosing between panels and individual components, consider your goals: privacy, wind exposure, and maintenance level.

Fixings and Finishes: The Details That Matter

Even the strongest timber and concrete won’t hold up without the right fixings. Choosing stainless steel screws, galvanised brackets, and rust-resistant nails helps prevent early failure, especially in damp climates.

Don’t forget protective elements like gravel boards, these sit at the base of your fence and prevent timber contact with the ground, where moisture and rot are most likely. We highly recommend installing a treated or concrete gravel board to protect the lifespan of your fence.

Adding a capping rail along the top helps seal the fence from water ingress and creates a neater finish.

Annual weatherproofing treatments go a long way, even on pressure-treated timber. A single coat each year protects against UV damage, moisture, and insect activity. It’s a small effort for years of extra life.

Building Boundaries That Last

The secret to a long-lasting fence? Don’t cut corners. Each component, from recessed fence posts to feather edge boards, cant rails to capping- plays a role in overall performance. A well-constructed Closeboard fence, built using high-quality materials and smart spacing, can last decades with minimal upkeep.

At Clarke Fencing, we offer everything you need to build a boundary that performs as well as it looks. Our Closeboard Fencing systems are designed to work together perfectly, whether you’re building it yourself or using our experienced installation team.
