Planning
When it comes to laying a deck there’s a lot to think about. Do you want smooth decking boards or grooved? Are decking kits a good idea or should you buy the materials separately? In truth, the planning is almost as important as the building.
Position
Deciding where to place your decking is key. Do you want to step straight out of your house onto the decking? Or would it be better somewhere else in the garden? Take note of which area of your garden gets the most sunshine. You’ll also need to decide if the decking will be raised or will sit on the ground. Is your garden at a lower level than your house? If so, raised decking may be cheaper than infilling the shortfall. Stretch some string between small wooden stakes to get a clearer picture of the size and position of your deck.
Materials
One of the cheapest materials to use would be pine. However, being less expensive means it can be damaged more easily. Cherry is a great choice, but it isn’t the most cost-effective option. Redwood is an ideal compromise. It’s a softwood, but has great resistance to weather conditions. Different types of wood require different decking spacing to allow for expansion, so remember to bear that in mind.
How to build a deck
Preparation
Clear the ground below your deck of any rocks or vegetation. If your deck is going over a grassed area, you will need to remove the turf. If there is no natural slope for drainage, this will make it easier to create one. If the ground is particularly uneven, you may need to lay your decking frame on concrete pads.
Building
Assemble your frame loosely on the ground and lay your decking boards on it. This will allow you to check that everything fits as it should. It’s important to do this before you fix things in place. The next step is to assemble the frame properly using the recommended fixings. The final stage is to fasten down your deck boards, remembering to allow the right spacing for expansion.
