Different Wooden Gate Designs

Wooden Garden Gates

Boundaries and fences mark out our personal territory, and attractive wooden gates can really bring them to life. It helps if your fence is attractive, too, but a stylish wooden gate can make all the difference to the finish of your home or boundary line. The good news is, whether it’s a picket gate or a wooden field gate you’re looking for, the choice is extensive.

Here at Clarke Fencing, we’ve been supplying customers with first-rate timber products since 1984. We’re proud of the quality of our products, as well as the friendly and reliable service we provide.

So let’s take a closer look at some wooden gate designs that could be perfect for your home.

The benefits of wooden gates

Cost: Wooden gate designs are generally more cost-effective than gates in wrought iron, steel or other materials. One reason for this is the versatility of wood, which can easily be cut and shaped to suit requirements.

Appearance: It’s probably fair to say that many of us are traditionalists at heart, particularly when it comes to our gardens. And there’s nothing more attractive and traditional than a wooden garden gate in a beautiful garden.

Durability: When properly treated against infestation and rot, wooden gates will last for many years. With numerous stains and finishes available, they can also be given a new lease of life whenever necessary.

Environmentally friendly: Wood is a renewable natural resource, which makes it much kinder to the environment than metal or plastic-based materials.

What type of gate?

Garden gates come in all kinds of styles and sizes, so knowing what you’re looking for is a clear advantage. If it’s a gate for a high fence, you’ll probably want something of a similar height. By the same token, a six foot gate in the middle of a low picket fence might look a little odd. So what are the options in wooden gate designs?

European style gates

European style gates are available in a range of designs to suit any setting. There’s a good choice of sizes, and a panelled gate can offer more in the way of privacy. But if you don’t want to block out the light, there are lattice-topped versions available, too.

Garden and picket gates

Garden and picket gates are generally suited to a low fence or an opening between hedges. The Regency style garden gate is both a classic and a favourite. That said, the standard slatted picket gate is still incredibly popular.

Closeboard gates

Closeboard gates are built to a heavy duty frame, these robust gates offer both privacy and security. They’re also available with capping, giving a professional finish and improved weather protection.

Tongue and groove gates

One of the classic wooden gate designs is tongue and groove gates, which never go out of style. It’s a strong and durable design, available with either a square or rounded top.
