Cant rails are a vital part of any closeboard fencing system, providing the horizontal strength needed to keep your fence secure for years to come. Running between posts, they support vertical featheredge boards, preventing sagging and warping. Their chamfered edge also improves water run-off, reducing rot and extending the life of your fence.
At Clarke Fencing, we supply pressure-treated rails cut using the (2EX) method from 125mm x 47mm timber. This produces two finished sections of approximately 75mm x 47mm, ideal for building a strong, professional fence line.
When constructing a traditional fence, horizontal rails are essential. They provide:
Structural strength – keeping featheredge boards firmly in place
Weather protection – chamfered edges shed water effectively
Durability – UC4 treatment guards against rot and decay
Simple installation – quick to fix using 100mm galvanised nails or screws
Compatibility – suited to both wooden posts and concrete recessed posts
The number of rails depends on fence height:
2.4m+ fences – 4 rails
1.8m fences – 3 rails
1.5m fences – 3 rails
1.2m fences – 2 rails
For best results, join them at post centres so each piece sits half on the post. This gives a uniform and professional finish.
Rails form part of a complete closeboard system, which also includes:
Featheredge boards – vertical panels for the fence face
Gravel boards – preventing timber from soil contact
Closeboard capping – finishing the top edge neatly
Postcrete – secure and quick post fixing

Fix the gravel board at the base of your fence line.
Position the bottom rail approx. 100–200mm above the gravel board.
Add the top one approx. 100–200mm below the capping line.
Space any remaining rails evenly between.
Secure with 100mm galvanised nails or screws.
